| Yes, we absolutely make
all the soaps ourselves, out in our backyard shed in Spruce Pine, North Carolina, located
in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains, and thus our name - the Blue Ridge Soap Shed! Some
of the herbs and flowers we use in our soaps, like Lavender, Rosemary, Comfrey and St.
John's Wort, are grown right in our own herb garden. But when Winter arrives in the
mountains, we must admit to making soap in the basement instead! The coconut oil gets
frozen solid and just a little difficult to scoop out and measure down to finite grams!
Besides, working in front of the fireplace each evening isn't exactly a hardship! :-) Cold-process
soapmaking - the process that creates the old-fashioned bar soaps - comes naturally to
Tim. After graduating from UNC-Chapel Hill with a major in botany and biology, 'Dr. T.'
went to graduate school and later taught chemistry for seven years at the high school and
community college levels. We are proud to have such built-in quality assurance and
creativity resident at the Soap Shed. Karen creates the artistic glycerine soaps, fabric
packaging of our products, and manages the Soapshed's business and marketing efforts.
