Since 1989, Rob and Beth
Moring Mangum have been partners in studio pottery. Rob, a second generation potter,
started making pottery in 1976 in his parents' studio in Sparta, North Carolina.
Rob met Beth at N.C. State University School of Design, where she was working in
textiles and surface design. They began working together in clay in 1989, after receiving
their bachelors degrees, when they started their business. Rob went on to receive a
Master's of Fine Arts degree at Indiana University, where they continued to maintain their
pottery business out of their studio there in Bloomington, Indiana.
In 1998 they moved to Weaverville, North Carolina, near Asheville. They have a
storefront gallery as well as a production studio in the same space.
All of the work in their gallery was made in their studio by Rob and Beth and their
production assistants, Ann Richards and Lara Stewart. Wheel thrown items are all made by
Beth. Our other items are slab built and individually crafted by Rob, Ann, and Lara. All
of the mixed media furniture and instrument pieces are hand built by Rob in our studio and
in his wood shop adjacent to our kiln room. Glazing and firing is done by all. The firing
is done in electric, natural gas, and propane kilns.
Mangum Pottery Studio and Gallery is located in an historic building on Main Street in
Weaverville, a thriving small town community offering fine restaurants, antiques, a golf
course, and several nice bed and breakfasts and cabins available for vacation rentals. Rob
and Beth live just two blocks from their studio with their daughters, Leah and Page, and
famous dog, Ben. |
