Cherokee Indian reservation
Surronded by the Great Smoky Mountains in Western North Carolina, The Qualla
Boundary (Cherokee Indian Reservation) has been a popular vacation destination for
decades. Today, Cherokee's visitor offerings include 45 motels, 145 cabins, 27
campgrounds, cultural events, attractions, Harrah's Cherokee Casino, tribal bingo, trout
fishing and much much more...all in the original homeland of the Cherokee people.
Adjacent to the Great Smoky Montains National Park and the southern entrance to the
Blue Ridge Parkway, Cherokee is an ideal location to explore all the region and the
reservation have to offer. The 550,000 acre National Park is the most visited Park in the
United States and provide breathtaking scenic vistas. Rise skyward on the Blue Ridge
Parkway and feel like you are on top of the world.
Cherokee prides itself in being the true cultural center of both the Cherokee people
and the Great Smokies. Our outdoor drama, "Unto These Hills" opened in July 1950
and is one of the oldest outdoor dramas in the U.S. The Museum of the Cherokee Indian is
the third oldest Indian museum in the country and recently completed a multi-million
dollar expansion. Qualla Arts and Crafts Mutual is the oldest Indian cooperative in the
U.S. and features locally made items.
Thirty miles of streams offer some of the best trout fishing in the eastern US. A hike
to our 200-foot Mingo Falls is a popular outdoor activity. Numerous area hiking trails and
picninc area (including the popular downtown Oconaluftee Island Park) ass another
dimension to a Cherokee vacation.
Simply, Cherokee is the center of western North Carolina's vacationland. Families have
been visiting us since the 1930's, building memories handed down from generation to
generation.
